When Even Goes East, the 8th recording from the Dave Wilson Quartet, (our first studio album since the 2015 Grammy nominated There Was Never); there are ten tracks in all, a compilation of four original songs penned by Dave (receiving some of the most positive reaction, and a lot of the radio “spins”), and six unique, compelling, and heartfelt arrangements of some of our favorite “Pop” music “New” standards including These Days (Jackson Browne, arr. Dave Wilson), Eyes of the World, (Grateful Dead, arr. Dave Wilson), Adios (Jimmy Webb, arr. Dave Wilson), the Beatles’ The Fool On The Hill (arr. Kirk Reese), Fire (Jimmy Hendrix, arr. Dave Wilson), and Wichita Lineman (Jimmy Webb, arr. Dave Wilson).

Meet the musicians:

Dave Wilson-tenor and soprano saxophone

The Dave Wilson Quartet is a Contemporary Jazz group led by the noted Tenor/Soprano Saxophonist, Educator, and composer to further and bring to fruition the music and vision of Dave Wilson, the artist. Defying categorization, the music is “what sounds good and can communicate with the audience on a deep level…it’s jazz”. Dave Wilson offers high caliber, compelling, contemporary live performances, featuring top notch nationally/internationally or regionally known personnel known for their exciting improvisations, creative individualistic compositions, and unique arrangements of standards. It has a very active performance schedule and is active and adept at presenting themselves on social media.

Dave Wilson has appeared at festivals, concerts, college campuses, and clubs regionally and in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. These include Musik Fest (Bethlehem, PA), Berks Jazz Fest, Artscape in Baltimore, Central PA Festival of the Arts in State College, PA, Scranton Jazz Festival, First Friday West Chester, Manassas Wine and Jazz Festival. Restaurants/clubs in Central PA include the Belvedere, Log Cabin, Southern Market (Lancaster); Victors, Fig & Barrel (York); Hershey Hotel Iberian Lounge. Jazz Clubs aside from Central PA include Chris’ Jazz Café (Philadelphia), An Die Musik (Baltimore), The Garage and Silvana (NYC).

He has now eight recordings under his own name, (including the latest “When Even Goes East”), all of which have received national airplay and positive reviews from leading jazz publications. Their fourth CD “There Was Never” (ZOHO Music, 2016), reached a high of #18 in the nationwide Jazz Weekly Jazz Radio Countdown, had a great review in Downbeat Magazine, and was placed in nomination for a Grammy in 2016. The fifth “One Night at Chris’” (recorded live at the legendary Chris’ Jazz Cafe) was released in the summer of 2019, achieved “Chartbound” status (Top 50) on jazz radio, and garnered positive reviews. Our sixth recording, released 1/7/2022, titled “Stretching Supreme” (Dave Wilson Music) is a tribute to John Coltrane. It reached a high of #31 in the Jazz Weekly Live Radio charts, garnered impressive reviews, and made noted jazz author Bill Milkowski’s top 12 Coltrane inspired albums in his Substack column-quite an honor!

Reviews for When Even Goes East:

“A collection that feels both reflective and adventurous… that views jazz tradition not as mere preservation but as a living language that can absorb almost anything and reinvent it.”

All About Jazz, by Pierre Giroux

“Dave’s work on saxophone immediately grabs us, creating an alluring atmosphere and taking us in some interesting directions. His saxophone creates a world I want to check out, want to live in for a while. It promises some excitement, some unusual characters, some fun. Dave’s sax work has a beautiful air of melancholy to it at moments, sometimes reaching out, sometimes turning inward.”

Michael Doherty’s Music Log

“On When Even Goes East, the ever-inventive Dave Wilson leads his quartet through a thoughtful blend of originals and reimagined pop tunes, shaping an experience that feels both familiar and freshly personal. Wilson’s tenor and soprano saxophones deliver lyrical depth and an exploratory edge… a recording worthy of repeated listening.”

The Jazz Page by D. Glenn Daniels

“A stylistically varied journey, which ventures from whimsical and barn-burning off-kilter originals to sensual slow burning gems. Wilson’s set of originals and crafty, dynamics-filled re-imaginings of renowned and obscurities by some of the 60’s and 70’s premiere songwriters feature a fresh, vibrant quartet.”

JW Vibe by Jonathan Widran

“Dave Wilson has chosen to rearrange, take apart, and put back together hits by Glen Campbell, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne. With a piano trio behind him, and remembering the lessons taught to him by the legendary sax man Joe Lovano, songs like “Wichita Lineman,” “
