Mullein Candle Workshop

October 3 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

$20

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is a hardy Saturnian biennial, a guardian of thresholds and teacher of how to endure, adapt, and even thrive in difficult places. Introduced to North America by early European settlers, you may recognize it by the tall, golden stalks that appear in summertime along rocky slopes and the edges of disturbed land. Its leaves and flowers have long been prized as herbal medicines, while the dried stalks can be dipped in wax, resin, or pitch and set alight to illuminate the way as we descend into the darker months of the year.

The tradition of making mullein “candles,” also known as hag tapers, is thought to date back to ancient Roman funeral rites, but it first appeared clearly in the 1526 European herbal, The Grete Herball, which described the dried stalk being “tallowed” to make a light. Please note: these are highly flammable and will be for outdoor use only.

Join local herbalist Sara Villani at Fluffy Butt Rescue to learn more about mullein’s history, folklore, botany, medicine, and energetics, ending with a (vegan!) mullein candle-making ceremony.
