MATHCOUNTS Tryouts for Easton Area Students in Grades 5–8
October 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FREE
Easton Area students in grades 5–8 who love math can try out for this year’s MATHCOUNTS teams on Friday, Oct. 2 at Easton Area High School at 7pm in rooms H203, H205, and H207 (enter at the main entrance, then turn right).
MATHCOUNTS is a national math competition for middle school students, founded in 1982. Students, called “mathletes,” work on algebra, geometry, number theory, counting and probability. They also learn to find the quickest, smartest way to solve a problem.
Who Can Try Out
Full-time students in grades 5–8 this school year, including 5th graders. Tryouts place students on the A, B or C team. More info about eligibility can be found here.
After Tryouts
- At least 10 practices, about once a week, 7–8:30pm at Easton Area High School, October through early February. Dates will be announced after tryouts.
- A school competition in January picks four students for the Lehigh Valley regional team in February. Ten more students compete at regionals as individuals.
- The top regional team goes on to the state competition in March, and the state winner goes to nationals in May.
Cost
Free. There are no fees and no fundraising; private donations cover all costs. Parents drive students to practices and to the regional competition.
Coaches
Zoe Boekelheide (physics professor at Lafayette College), Zack Murtha (actuary and former high school math teacher) and Niki Viscomi. All three are parents of current mathletes. Former mathletes often come back to help coach.
